Abstract. The article presents the problem of archives as a scientific laboratory and a challenge for researchers in the digital society. In terms of content there are two thematic focuses of the study: digital transformation of archives and their information resources; the researcher like a user of retrospective documentary information in a digital environment. Analysis of the problems and challenges, that the archival institutions and modern researchers face in the era of digital civilization, is made.
