Absract. The article presents a theoretical analysis focused on the possibilities of the Internet to influence the development of key competences in today's children and adolescents. The first part of the analysis presents basic characteristics of Internet
consumption. Emphasis is placed on the fact that the Internet provides access to
an unlimited amount of information. This access requires continuous control over
the type of Internet services used by children and adolescents. The second part of the analysis emphasizes the fact that the Internet has media characteristics that can influence the behavior, cognitive processes, physiology and attitudes of users. The third part of the analysis presents characteristics of the virtual environment that can change the lives of users of Internet services. The data make it possible to draw the following generalizations: for an individual, the greatest advantages of the Internet are related to the opportunities to provoke real experiences, to experience real sensations and to form real personal qualities. The diverse possibilities for impact that the Internet has must be taken into account by pedagogical specialists. This can provide a variety of creative applications of Internet technology for the development of key competences in today's children and adolescents.
