Abstract. The paper examines 181 comparisons of the interpretations of a given themes in two literature texts, one of which is unstudied, carried out by high school students, insofar as it is assumed that it is through such tasks that the degree of mastery of a specific competence can be assessed. Several typical skill deficits manifested in task performance are differentiated, their causes are sought, and some opportunities for optimizing the assessment toolkit are suggested – with the hope of supporting efforts to reoriented literature education from learning and reproducing knowledge to mastery of literary competences.
