Abstract. The text describes the essence of tourism. The statistical researches for the development of tourism and its digitalization are considered. The characteristics of the old and the new tourist are analyzed and compared. Statistical data related to the number of tourists who visited Bulgaria for the period from January 2019 to July 2021 are presented. Visits to Bulgaria as a tourist destination are considered in comparison with the visits of tourists from other countries. The number of Bulgarian tourists visiting other countries is also reported.
