Abstract. The research aims to focus on the study of vulgarism as part of vocabulary. The stress is put on the role of these words in literature, being expressive language with certain attitude and specifics. The research compares the use of vulgarism in the original text of J. D. Salinger’s novel “The Catcher in the Rye”
and its two official translations into Bulgarian, as well as a translation, made by an artificial intelligence (Chat GPT). The task observes the choices of words made by the translators and the stylistic role of vulgarism in literature texts.
